About Alopecia

Alopecia refers to abnormal hair loss, which may be temporary or permanent depending on the cause. It can involve the scalp, beard, eyebrows, eyelashes, or other body areas.

What are the most common causes of alopecia?

Alopecia can be caused by:

  • Male or female pattern hair loss (genetic)

  • Alopecia areata, patchy hair loss due to an autoimmune condition

  • Stress, illness, pregnancy, or medications causing increased shedding

  • Thyroid issues or low iron

  • Fungal infections or inflammatory scalp conditions

  • Scarring conditions that damage hair follicles

How do I know if my hair loss is normal or a sign of alopecia?

Shedding about 100 hairs per day is normal. If you notice bald patches, increasing thinning, redness, soreness, or sudden heavy shedding, it may indicate alopecia and should be checked by a healthcare provider.

Where else can I get support in NZ?

NZAlopecia offers community support, resources, social groups, events, and advocacy. They also work with the Ministry of Health on issues like the wigs subsidy.

When should I see a doctor?

Seek medical help if you notice:

  • Sudden or patchy hair loss

  • Scalp redness, itching, or pain

  • Hair loss after starting a new medication

  • Emotional distress due to appearance changes

  • A doctor can identify the cause and discuss treatment options.
